Around here there are three different diesel sources and pricing. The most expensive is consumer automotive. Cheaper than that is for semi tractors. The cheapest is the off road diesel for farm use, etc. I've been criticized for filling my yellow diesel container at the semi tractor pump when the off road station is closed. I figure I'm still paying more than I should but not as much as I could.

Each has it's place. Box blades are ideal for driveway maintenance and do a great job contouring dirt surfaces as they'll hold what they pick up rather than let it just spill off either side.

There are times when you'll want to angle a blade to move material off to one side (like snow removal) and they're great for that. If I were only able to buy one now, it'd be the box blade. I know a number of people who've welded up different ways to attach additional weight to them. One made a rack to accommodate suitcase weights and another added two rods so he could add barbell weights he already had.

He probably has. I, on the other hand, haven't yet and found the information helpful today. I'm thinking my JD 4200 might be better off with a 5' rotary mower. I've got around 28 HP overall but a little less at the PTO, especially with the hydro transmission.

I ended up buying a First Choice box blade for $285 and am very please with it. It's about 100 pounds heavier than the KK and is vastly superior in terms of fit and finish. The welds were straight, true and even throughout. The finish was a powder coat paint. I was even able to get it in John Deere green at no extra charge.

I had it on my trailer and couldn't resist stopping in at the local TSC so I could see it and the KK side by side. There was absolutely no comparison.

The reason I was given the $270 price instead of the regular $300 was that the finish on the KK was all scraped up.

I'd recommend First Choice to anyone. It's like buying Land Pride or better quality at a KK price or better.

I wanted a 1050 also. I ended up with a 4200 HST just because I got a great deal on it. I know right now there are a couple I've seen for sale in the $8K range if that helps.

I'm pretty sure it's NOT the First Choice. I've had conversation with the owner of First Choice and the impression I got was that First Choice is a start up by some former Land Pride people. If you really want to know I'll be happy to ask for you.

Does anyone know if the three point hitch parts (drawbar, center link, lift links, sway links & draft link) on the 4200, 4300 & 4400 interchange with those on the new 4210, 4310 & 4410 tractors? A local dealer indicated they were but I've not found him to be overly reliable on information in the past.

I have about eleven acres I need to mow two or three times a summer with my 26 HP (20 @ PTO) Deere 4200 MFWD. The ground is pretty level and just grass and weeds. After looking at a couple of auctions at rough looking used bringing $200-$300 I think I'll be better off going new. I was offered a 5' Howse for $450 or a 5' King Kutter for $550 by a dealer who was at an auction yesterday. Neither have chain guards or slip clutch and each has a stump jumper. Are those things I need or should want? What are the pro's and con's of them? Also, what do you think of the prices I was quoted and how much should I expect to pay for a slip clutch, chain guards or any other "options" you might suggest?

I realize nothing lasts forever but I'd like to buy something that'll be what I want and need the first time around rather than sit and wish I'd done something different. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I have a 4200 and it does have a larger frame and is more versatile with implements, etc. Of course, I wish I had a 4300. ;o) Good luck with your decision.

Does anyone know if canopies are specific to given brands and models or are they relatively interchangeable? I was offered a canopy which came off a long gone Ford utility tractor for my 4200. The price is right (free) but I don't know if it'll match up. Has anyone done this or should I just go with the trial and error method?

As with most 'combination' tools, this will do more than any individual tool but won't do any of the functions as well. The same holds true for the four-N-one bucket. Consider that before you buy one.

Most full floored car hauler trailers will have two 3500# axles for a 7,000 lb. GVW. You should be able to find those around fairly easily. Now they most all have brakes and breakaway boxes, but double check anyhow. As to length, it's never a bad idea to go a little larger than you need; It saves you trading up when you get a larger tractor. ;o)

I'm thinking of getting a trailer for my tractor, too. Everything I've seen and read leads me toward getting a 7,000# GVW trailer (two 3500# axles) with a full floor. I'm thinking it'll be great for the tractor as well as moving any other vehicles or just about anything else.

I have a 2001 4200 MFWD. The only things I've heard regarding the 4200's is one of tire scuffing with an older style front axle. There is a huge thread here about that problem I'm sure you can find. Good luck with your search. I hope this helps.

If you're buying new anyhow, why not just buy one that's designed for a backhoe? I have a 4200 with a backhoe that's designed for it and it works great. If I had been buying new, for the money difference, I'd have gotten a 4300. I hope this helps.

It sounds like your tractor is working as it should. In 4WD both axles are turning as they should (albeit spinning one wheel, as will happen sometimes). When you lock in your differential on the rear it eliminates one rear wheel spinning while the other sits. Then you have three wheels spinning while one on the front axle sits. Your differential lock only works on the rear differential, which is why you then have three wheels pulling (two rear and a front). It sounds like maybe the problem is that the 4WD lock in isn't releasing if you see no difference with it locked in or not. You should not experience either front wheel turning in 2WD with one rear wheel spinning. I hope this helps.
